Composing a Research Paper

  • Start reading. Reading everything that you can on the subject can help you better understand what you are going to be writing about. The more you read, the more information you will have on the subject.
  • As you are reading, take notes on the subject. This will help you recall the information later for creating your outline. Also, cite the source on each piece of material that you take notes on because you will need this later when you create your work cited or reference page.
  • Create an outline of all of the information that you want to include in your paper. Lay it out from beginning to end starting with what will be in the introduction, body, and the conclusion of your paper.
  • Write your paper, just put pen to paper or start typing. Finish the entire paper before you go back to do edits.
  • After you wrote the paper, don’t look at it right away. Step away for a few hours or days then come back and edit the work.
  • Double check all of the facts and make sure the work cited page is properly set up.
  • Now that you have all of this done, you can ask someone else to read it for you. Doing this will give you a better chance of finding errors that you missed.

Now it is time to hand it in, you have done all of the work and checked and double-checked your work so it should read great. Following all of these steps will help you write a great paper no matter the topic. If you start early and do the work, you will be able to create a masterpiece. But if you only do the minimum, you work will show that and then you won’t get high marks from your instructors.
